Maude Meyers recalls island events and places that pertained to her life on the island, such as when South Seas put lots up for sale and she bought the first one. The Captiva bakery closed and becmae a guest house at the Mid-Island Cottages. The Post Office was in the Gore Hotel by Timmy's Nook. She also recalls parties on Captiva and the opening of the causeway. The Shell Club started in 1961, and Hurricane Donna was a major hurricane in the 1960s. Hurricane Agnes in 1972 had devastating effects on the island because of the unexpected storm surge. |
