Summary |
The first homesteader on Captiva is debatable, but in the cemetary, the gravestone for William H. Binder claimes that he is the island's first settler. He homesteaded about 160 acres of land in the island's mid-section. The families that followed Binder in settling on Captiva include the Carters, the Kennons, and the Bryants. The Carters homesteaded in what is now South Seas. When a hurricane struck and devastated the property, Clarence C. Chadwick purchased the land. |
