Summary |
Across Roosevelt Channel, 200 yards east of Captiva, sits Buck Key, a 1.5 mile long island. Homesteaders lived on the island for 25 years, but left the island when a tidal wave struck in 1921 that ruined citrus groves that sustained the community. The first homesteader to the island was Herbert Dwight Brainard in 1896, a Quebec dairy farmer. His family was joined a year by two other families, the Knowleses and the Ormsbys. This article provides an in-depth history of Buck Key. |
