On October 20, 2020 Mike Boris and Bob Johnson inspected the bell at Captiva Chapel by the Sea. These 9 photos were taken at the time of that inspection. What we currently know about the bell: It’s amazing. The bell came from what is known as the 2nd Meneely Bell Foundry. This foundry was established in 1870 by the 3rd son of the founder Andrew Meneely. The two foundries competed vigorously (and sometimes bitterly) with each other. Together, they produced about 65,000 bells before they both closed in 1952". Today there are Meneely bells on every continent, except Antartica. The bell was donated to Captiva Chapel by the Sea by Mr. Josiah Robert. The mode of delivery and date of installation is unknown. Molly Robert (Mrs Josiah Robert) speaks of the bell in audio recording iavailable on our You Tube channel which you may access through this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OfqhtMXYMDY&list=UUQexRw4TqGF47ZUdYBuc5Uw&index=24 Molly Robert begins speaking about the Chapel bell at timestamp 38:44 Here is a transcript of Molly Robert being interviewed by Kay Schultz: KS: Well, Molly's husband, after he did get to come down here every winter, made a contribution of the bells to the Chapel. The bell was in our school on Long Island and I don't know, did he have to pay for it? MR: He paid a dollar and other considerations. KS: And they had it shipped down here for the Chapel (Unidentified woman): I didn't realize that. MR: But my husband didn't want anything made of it, but he wanted Capt. Leach, Capt. Byron Leach; to get the credit and had the belfrey built on. KS: In memory of Dr. Dickey, in honor of Dr. Dickey. There is a little plaque. MR: Yes. KS So it was your husband that arranged for the bell? MR: He arranged for it but he had Capt. Leach get the credit for it. KS: Did they send it on a ship? MR: Yes, I guess they did. |
